This is the last sampler of this year. Somebody asked for pirate bands, so here's to you.

Dannicus Live is a 6 piece band from San Diego/Lakeside, California. "Dannicus Live plays drunken-Pirate-Irish-pub-party-rock that we all get to yell along with".

www.dannicuslive.com

www.myspace.com/dannicuslive

The band has released two albums:

"Dead Man's Tales" (2007)
"Liquor and Whores" (2008)

The first one is only available at the shows, or can be ordered directly from the band via a Myspace message.

The second one is available at i-Tunes and Amazon.

The first track is taken from "Dead Man's Tales". Tracks 2-4 are taken from "Liquor and Whores". Track 5, Sirens, is yet unreleased and will be a part of their next album which they hope to release in 2010.

Man Over Board are from Eugene, Oregon.

"Man Over Board masterfully combines the medieval sounds of shanties, foc's'les, drinking songs, wake traditionals, patriotic nautical battle hymns and pirate influences from the 1600's to the 1800's with some great more recent styles and genres"

www.manoverboardmusic.com

www.myspace.com/manoverboardpirate

They have only one album and it has already been reviewed at www.celtic-rock.de:

"To Dance a Gallow's Jig" (13 tracks, 2009)

It can be purchased here.

The five tracks in this sampler come from live recordings.

The next band comes from Sweden,Ye Banished Privateers. They are 10 pirates.

www.myspace.com/yebanishedprivateers

All the tracks are taken from live recordings, unfortunately they have not released their debut album yet.

Finally, The Pirates are a five piece band fromPrice Edward Island (Canada)

www.myspace.com/thepiratestheband

Maybe they are not a raucous band, but I feel that their songs are rather good.

They released an EP a couple of years ago.

"Deck Swabbers" (EP, 2007)

BLOOD OR WHISKEY - Live in Vienna

(Taken from Wikipedia)

"Blood or Whiskey is an Irish punk/folk band from Leixlip, County Kildare, Republic of Ireland. The band was formed in September 1993 taking strong influence from Shane MacGowan, as well as The Pogues and The Clash. The band originally had problems with their non-traditional music style among native Irish fans and released their first album "Blood or Whiskey" (Self Titled) in 1996. Several years of touring followed before the release of "No Time to Explain "which was followed by a tour of the USA.

After the leaving of their original lead singer, Barney Murray, in 2003, guitarist Dugs Mulhooly took over the reins as the band's frontman, Blood or Whiskey's lineup underwent many changes and in 2005 released "Cashed Out On Culture",which is highly regarded as their most punk oriented of their albums, although it maintains the driving traditional melodies that are trademarks of the band's sound. In 2006, whistle player Alan Confrey died from a heart attack tragically after the band returned home to Dublin after a UK tour with Stiff Little Fingers.

They toured Europe in September 2006, supporting The Misfits on some shows. The tour has been entitled "Back from the Brink" by the band. The band also supported The Pogues at their annual Christmas gig in the RDS, Dublin on the 23rd of December, 2007.

The general sound of the band is a manic mix of aggressive lyrics, punk beats and Celtic melodies."

RUM CURRENCY-Demo

(Thanks to Anonymous for the shout-out)

"After being marooned in Melbourne for three years and recording two projects called Blaggard, I moved back to Cairns. Given that I didn't want the project to be confused with the Blaggards or another Australian band called Blaggard, it was an obvious choice to abandon the name, so I took up Rum Currency.

I am the sole member of Rum Currency and I haven't played live since 1992 at the National Folk Festival in Canberra. However, if you live in the Far North and are interested in getting something happening, drop me a line!

I've played in a few punk and hardcore bands, a folk band called the Born Again Pagans, and was a member of Catgut Mary for about one week.

The instruments I play on the recordings:

- guitar and bass
- mandolin
- banjo
- tin whistle
- bodhran
- harmonica
- gitzuki [home made bazooki from a 12 string gtr]

The instruments I don't play on recordings:

- squeeze box
- drums

I am also planning on making a hurdy gurdy, which should prove interesting, if it works.

Everything is recorded in my spare bedroom. In fact, I didn't pick up an instrument for almost ten years, until I thought learning to home record might be fun. Like most of my instruments, my sound card and mikes are fairly cheap. "

This info has been taken from:

http://blaggard.wordpress.com/the-band/

The 9 tracks can be downloaded one by one or zipped from his website.

TORTILLA FLAT - New Album

(Taken from MySpace)

Tortilla Flat, named after the John Steinbeck novel, is a 3-piece punk rock group and was founded in Langenthal, Switzerland in 1991. Having been friends since school days, the same three members have stayed and played together ever since the beginning. They write and perform mostly simple, short, straight, melodic punk rock songs, often influenced by Irish, Scottish, English and American folk music. Up to the end of 2008, the band has played well over 200 gigs in Switzerland, Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. At selected gigs they are sometimes joined by bagpipers Peter and Beat.

In the last couple of years, Tortilla Flat have also started to perform acoustic gigs that deliver a blend of acoustic versions of their own songs, Irish folk classics as well as cover versions of vintage punk and rock favourites. At acoustic gigs, they are often accompanied by their long-time friend and supporter Spider McEwan, Hugo Bosca from fellow Langenthal ska-punk group Bosca as well as other guest musicians.

BELTAINE'S FIRE - Weapon of the Future

14 tracks, 60:06

1 Carpe Diem 4:05
2 A Matter of Will 4:15
3 Beautiful 3:05
4 Queen 3:24
5 Thrive 4:12
6 Supersized 3:47
7 Home 4:09
8 Power 3:58
9 Up Against the Wall 3:23
10 When the Floods Come 5:49
11 A Month of Storms 5:29
12 Be Myself 5:12
13 Hex 4:27
14 I Am 4:51

The first album from California-based Celtic Hip Hop band, Beltaine's Fire. Located somewhere in the hypothetical space between Rage Against the Machine and the Wolfe Tones, this is rebel music at it's finest.. This is a re-release after fixing some minor technical issues with the first version. The first version had 1,991 downloads before we took it down.

(Taken from the band's website)

There is a place where the rebel ballads of the Celtic bards, the storytelling of protest folk and the fury of revolutionary hip-hop music intersect. Beltaine’s Fire occupies that space. Their sound is both deeply rooted in tradition and history and completely original, combining ancient and modern in a bold fusion that Epitunes described as “that rare group that succeeds at combining seemingly disparate musical styles into an appealing new sound… unlike anything you’ve heard of before” and that Malcolm Carden of the Livermore Scottish Games described as “The new face of Celtic Music.”

Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, Beltaine’s Fire is comprised of Lynx, drummer Cozy T, bassist/backup vocalist Laura, cellist/mandolin extraordinaire K8R, and John on a custom-modified electric banjo. The band has a uniquely eclectic style mixing the cadence of rap with traditional Celtic sounds. The end product combines melodies reminiscent of the Wolfetones and Flogging Molly with the revolutionary energy of bands like Public Enemy, The Coup, and Rage Against the Machine.

The group has played everything from family-oriented cultural events and festivals to college campuses, folk venues, live radio, night clubs, Irish Pubs, and hip-hop shows. They have performed alongside such Celtic luminaries as Solas, Tempest, Enter the Haggis, Vishten, and Molly’s Revenge. With an infectiously danceable live show and some of the most insightful socially conscious lyrics in the business, this is a band that can do just about anything and sound good doing it.

"The Weapon of the Future" is our first album, featuring Lynx on Vocals, Laura on Bass and backup vocals, John on Banjo, and Chris on Drums. All the tracks are radio & family-friendly. The album is copyrighted under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 License, so once you’ve purchased it you’re free to share it with others for non-profit purposes. If you want to license a track for a for-profit purpose contact us and we’ll talk it over.

The album is available both as a download and CD. We are 100% independent and all the money goes to the band.

Special thank-you’s on this project go out to all of our fans, friends, & supporters, to Davin @ Polymorph studios and to all the folks at Expressions School for Digital Music for hooking us up with recording time, to our families / spouses / partners and loved ones, and to everyone who’s involved in movements to make the world a better place. Thank you for your love, support, and inspiration.

THE CEILI FAMILY - TORY KINGS New Album Out!

(Taken from the band's Myspace)

Here we go! The Ceili Family’s new CD! Nine songs written by themselves. After playing the music of Christy Moore, the Dubliners and the Pogues on „Don’t eat yellow snow!“. And after having one original Ceili Family tune on „tooraloo“. „Fall Face First“, a story taken from Shane MacGowan’s autobiography, got a great reception. The guy drinking 27 Gins and 7 pints of Stout leaving the Pub with applause...and falling face first on the floor outside the Pub. Reviewers like „Shite’n’Onions“ told the Ceili Family to have more Ceili songs and less cover versions. No problem. Here’s „pure Ceili“ on „Tory Kings“.

Tory Kings“ is Irish-inspired, contemporary music. No messing around. Handmade Irish Entertainment Folk’n’Roll with no frills! „You cannot tell a good story, without a pack of lies“, Ronnie Drew once said in a TV show. The Ceili Family tells many a story. About the mutineers ending up in a bay with no Ladies at all. About devious Courtesans. Elation and devastation. Songs that make you happy, thoughtful and often thirsty.

The Ceili Family is on tour-a-loo since 1996. Played small Pubs and Dive bars, as well as well-known Open Air-Festivals all over Germany. The band crossovers a lot. Irish Folk Festivals, Village Fairs or other occasions. Meets purist legends like the Dubliners, infamous Shane MacGowan or harlequins like German artist „Honigdieb“. Size does not matter when it come to audiences. The Ceili Family does not care if they’re playing in front of a festival crowd of 2000 people or merely 50 drunks in a smokey Pub. The band always playing their hearts out. Presenting their own songs. And classics like „Whiskey in the Jar“ or „Dirty Old Town“ from time to time as well as trash-talking breaking out in laughter...

The Ceili Family celebrates every concert as if it was the last. Or their first...

BLEEDING HEARTS - Christmas Newsletter

OK, A RANT……………………………. 2009 is nearly over and we have done the last gig of the year. Was it a great year? Well ‘err no, it was quite mixed. Some good, some bad, some indifferent gigs, but they all played their part in the year, one way or another, in getting us where we are now. Broke!

The priority was about getting back up to speed because at the beginning of 2009 we found ourselves back as a 3 piece, just like in the 90’s. There was a funky new website (this one) and come the end of January we had a new guy on fiddle for gigs ‘madfiddler Mark’. Mark had to pick up the ball and run with it, and we soon kicked his notes off stage to help him run a bit faster we can tell you. He’s done well, fitted in a treat, real nice guy we can get on with and party with, we just need to convince him to stick around ha ha. So, all in all, the target for 2009 has been achieved. Job done!

Along the way, we have even gained a mandolin player, Ewan, for those acoustic shows. Unfortunately, although he came to Europe with us, the UK hasn’t seen Ewan ‘cus we had to cancel 3 gigs (previously we had only cancelled 1 in 10 years) due to swine flu. We don’t like cancelling gigs, it hurts us. Still, all the venues were cool with us about it.

And what of 2010? Well, we’d like to see Mark stick around and maybe even feature on a new album for us. I have a bagful of new songs, plus of course all the newish unrecorded stuff we have been playing since the last album in 2006: ‘Politics & Love’. However, as our old bus blew up on us early in 2009 and we had to purchase a new one (not exactly new but new to us), we is broke! We is in debt! Until that is paid off, it is difficult to set any timescales. Hopefully, we’ll get there towards the end of 2010 with some studio dates for a 2011 release; unless some rich long-lost uncle arrives and helps us out financially before then.

Times are hard for everyone of course, and xmas is a troubled financial time for all. Except the Bankers of course, who have had nearly a trillion, yes I said a trillion pounds of our money, that’s £1,000,000,000,000. That’s an ‘effin big number (I had to google it ‘cus it’s so big) with a lot of noughts when all the rest of us have only redundancies, pay cuts and freezes, tax rises and public service cuts to look forward to! And then we’ll find ourselves in an election. There’s no doubt that Labour deserve a kicking for their performance in office, especially their pandering to a right wing agenda, PFI, Academy Schools, continuing student loans and fees, outsourcing, privatisation, lack of proper banking regulation, invasive policing, restricted personal freedoms, national insecurity and obsession with fighting pointless wars costing the lives of our soldiers at a huge human and financial cost.

Still, we did get the minimum wage, European Social Chapter and a bagful of other much-needed public spending initiatives. But is that enough? On balance, I am not sure but those Blairites have to go but to replace them with a Tory Govt…you have to be joking! The bad stuff I mentioned will only be worse.

For those of you old enough to remember 1979 to 1997 get a reality check. The Tories were shite and they haven’t changed…for Christ sake this year they already tried a plot to abolish the minimum wage! When in office they plan to scrap the only remaining piece of consensus workplace legislation they didn’t abolish in the 1980’s…the 1974 Health and Safety At Work Act. Not clever IMHO! You’ll be literally dying to go to work. If they haven’t slashed and burned anything or any jobs that are actually left or cut the crap out of the NHS, Education and other vital services. That and ‘cut red-tape’ which is a euphemism for looking after their rich mates interests - at your expense. They want less banking regulation, like that's really gonna help us innit?! Oh, but it will mean that Banks can carry on pretty much as they were paying those lovely bonuses. Cheers, mines a Bolly!

It never ceases to amaze me that when we get in a pickle due to right wing policies, some folks think the answer is a harsher version of what’s already failed. That’s a bit like abusing your car, then when it breaks down, hitting it all over with a sledgehammer in the hope it starts to look great again and might start working. It don’t work, ok! It’s broke, it needs TLC and investment.

The Tories ain’t changed, just the frontman, oh yeah he’s a better singer than the last guy, but the tunes are still crap, outdated and have their signature key stuck in the 1800’s.

Hey, ‘we’re all in this together’ Cameron says, so I hope he passes some of his vast inherited royally connected sir whatsitthingy personal fortune (£30 million) on to the Exchequer for the good of the nation in these hard times. Call me a commie if ya like but this bloke is vacuous, has no idea what life on a council estate on income support is like, he’s never needed a real job, or done one and he’s only ever done politics – that’s what Eton and Oxford buy you.

You’ll find me in inspired form lyrically, it will intensify as we get to June and I break into a cold sweat at the thought of people who might actually still swallow this one nation Tory bullshit or worse, they go and vote for a nazi party like the BNP. I already have the song to fit the occasion. Hang Parliament is what I say! Whoops, hung Parliament, sorry.

Anyway, I digress but I did say this was a rant and there it is.

Have a good Christmas or whatever else it is you believe in and a specially fabtastic new year. Drown your sorrows and stay drunk in 2010 that’s my advice, it might be for the best ‘cus at least they won’t be able to blame you for anything. Oh, and don’t forget to pop along and check us out at a gig or two. We appreciate your support. We might appear miserable unsocial ungrateful fuckers some times but I assure you we’re not like that really. We are only miserable ungrateful fuckers when we have to pay for beer. At other times we are cheery optimistic souls still hoping that some A&R guy comes knocking at our door from EMI, or Sony, Or Rough Trade.

Play it loud and get drunk ‘cus it’s the only thing that sometimes makes sense. I have the tinnitus and empty bottles here to prove it.

FLOGGING MOLLY - Las Vegas

(Taken from Wikipedia)

"Prior to forming Flogging Molly, Dublin born Dave King was the vocalist for heavy metal band Fastway featuring guitarist "Fast" Eddie Clarke of Motörhead in the early to mid 80's. He later fronted a hard rock band called Katmandu (1991), featuring Mandy Meyer of Krokus on guitars. Afterwards, Dave King retained a record deal with Epic records and began to work on a solo album, but began to reconsider his record deal when the label opposed his idea of bringing in traditional Irish instruments. King negotiated out of his record deal to go his own way musically soon after.

In 1993, King met guitarist Ted Hutt, bassist Jeff Peters, and fiddle player Bridget Regan and put together a rock band with a celtic feel. They began to play a mix of Irish traditional and rock. Putting Dave's poetic lyrics to rocking melodies, they played at a Los Angeles pub called Molly Malone's weekly building a small, but loyal following. Together they wrote songs such as Black Friday Rule and Devils Dance Floor, which was the beginning of Flogging Molly's unique sound. Ted and Jeff then left Flogging Molly because an earlier band of theirs received a record deal. Dave and Bridget began to find new members and the current band was formed.

They continued a routine of playing every Monday night at Molly Malone's. Then 17-year old Nathen Maxwell snuck into a show as a fan and soon after joined the band.[1] They put out a live album, Alive Behind the Green Door in 1997. In an interview with Kerrang! magazine, King stated that the band's name comes from the bar (Molly Malone's) that faithfully supported the band from the very beginning, "We used to play there every Monday night and we felt like we were flogging it to death, so we called the band Flogging Molly." They were signed onto SideOneDummy Records after a show when the record company's owners attended a concert and noted their intensity."

GOATS DON'T SHAVE

(Taken from Wikipedia)

Goats Don't Shave
were an Irish folk rock band from Dungloe, County Donegal, Ireland. Formed in 1990, the group was fronted by singer-songwriter Pat Gallagher and backed by musicians Jason Philbin (fiddle), Charlie Logue (keyboards), Declan Quinn (whistle), Gerry Coyle (bass), Sean Doherty (acoustic guitar) and Michael Gallagher (drums).

The group released two albums together, The Rusty Razor (1992) and Out in the Open (1994). After a sabbatical which has lasted from 1995 onwards, a third album Tór was released in 1998 containing material from both Pat Gallagher and Goats Don't Shave. They are most well known for the song "Las Vegas (In the Hills of Donegal)" taken from their debut album.

Their name comes from a pub incident in which a drunken old man was told to go and have a shave and clean himself up - his response was to walk away muttering the words Goats Don't Shave!! Since their formation back in the summer of 1990, Goats Don't Shave have risen to become one of the most popular bands Ireland has ever produced.

They began performing their Celtic folk-rock in between their day jobs; which included plumbing and fishing, at which point the lads started to pick up regular bookings. Next they went around the country, cadging money to record a small tape. "There were five songs on it, we got 500 copies run off and started to sell it locally. These sold, so we got another 500, these sold, so we got 1000 etc. The word must have got about, as record companies started investigating us," says Declan.

"We didn't start out intentionally to be a band...it just took over our lives!"

Since then, the band have gone from strength to strength, never looking back. Five top singles and a series of sell out gigs at British Universities and Irish concert halls followed and 1993 saw the Goats stealing shows at the prestigious Glastonbury and Cambridge festivals. In the same year they were voted Best Band by Time Out Magazine.

In 1994, the Goats released their first album through Cooking Vinyl, The Rusty Razor. This fiery mix of folk, traditional music and rock was hailed by critics as an absolute classic, and the album went gold in Ireland. Following such success they released a second album later that year, Out in the Open, a rockier, much rounder piece which maintained their well earned reputation as a band capable of great things.

Goats Don't Shave disbanded in the late 1990s when tension grew between band members.

The band reformed in 2003 to play at the popular Mary From Dungloe International Festival, the concert each year is usually held in the towns Main Street, however due to over 1,000 people showing up to see the bands rare performance it was moved to The Cope car park. This was the last time the band performed together. There were discussions between members of the band about a possible reformation in 2006, however the plans came to nothing. Gallagher, is also no longer in contact with any of the previous members.

1) The Celtic City Sons (Melbourne, Victoria)

www.mp3.com.au/artist.asp?id=311

"For 10 Years the Celtic City Sons have excited audiences with their powerful high energy Celtic rock."

"These indie folk-rockers employed a punk ethos to tackle the rich and centuries-old tradition of Celtic music. It's not surprising then that the band was compared to The Pogues, The Levellers and Wedding, Parties, Anything".

Ronnie MacDonald, a North Sea Gas (Scottish folk band) member played for a 12-year stint in Australia with the Celtic City Sons.

3) Mutiny (Melbourne, Victoria)

"Mutiny is an Australian folk punk band based in Melbourne. Their slogan is "Folk punk for punk folk". They first formed in 1991 and have performed in Australia, Europe and the US. The original members were Chris Patches (vocals, drums), Greg Stainsby (guitar, mandolin), Briony Grigg (vocals, 12 string guitar), and Alice Green (bass). Chris originally sang in Melbourne crust band Compost. Greg and Alice were members of Melbourne punk band Insyte. Their songs tend to revolve around lives and issues of the working class and convicts, with a strong thread of Australian history throughout all of their releases. Their sound is often referred to as 'pirate' as their melding of folk sounds with punk imagery, politics and style gives many of their songs the feel of a jig. The use of a mandolin and piano accordion add to this feel as well. They have a strong anti-authoritarian philosophy and this comes out in their music and live shows. They played throughout the UK and Europe in 1994 and again through Europe in 1997. They also toured the United States in 1999. Greg Stainsby, Alice Green and Mark Jennings are currently also in The Currency."

5) Sforzando (Melbourne, Victoria)

www.sforzando.com.au

www.myspace.com/sforzandomusic

"Sforzando are a band from Melbourne, Australia who describe themselves as a "7-piece pirate orchestra" (fans usually refer to them simply as a "pirate band"). Their musical style combines elements of punk, Western European folk music and sea shanties to create "a soundscape for the ocean", and there is a notable Irish influence on their sound, though they have recently delved into the world of psych folk as well. They mostly perform live at venues in Melbourne but also regularly tour various music festivals around Australia."

"SFZ is pronounced 'Sforzando' or 'Ess Eff Zed'. Either/or. On all good pirate ships there existed a pirate orchestra. It was the orchestra's responsibility to chronicle in song the adventures of the pirates. SFZ are an 8-piece pirate orchestra who blend ferocious punk, Western European folk melodies and classic sea shanties to create a soundscape for the ocean. They sing of sailors that can't swim, ships that won't sail, dangerous mermaids and sirens ravishing the waves, mutineers, the vengeance of the sea Gods, the fury of the ocean, the destruction of the shoreline, the poetry of waves and of course, pirates. Specially pirates."

Discography:

"We Sail Away" (1997)

"Midnight at the Lighthouse" (Live at Port Fairy Folk Festival, 1999)

"Hideous Sea Creatures" (16 tracks,2002)

6) The GO Set (Melbourne, Victoria)

www.triplejunearthed.com/Artists/View.aspx?artistid=4939

www.myspace.com/thegoset

The GO Set are a five-piece punk rock band which formed in 2002.

A punk ethos runs through the band - so much so that one critic claimed The Go Set could be likened to imagining "the political sentiment and social conscience of Billy Bragg or early Midnight Oil whilst drinking copious amounts and jamming with The Pogues and AC/DC , in a sweaty pub gig on a Friday night".

They cite influences such as The Pogues, Weddings Parties Anything, The Clash and Radio Birdman, as the most influential groups in their music, and have a particularly Australian social and political emphasis within their lyrics.

Discography:

Welcome To The New Dimension (5 track EP, 2003)

Sing A Song Of Revolution (12 tracks, 2004)

The Hungry Mile (14 tracks, 2006)

A Journey For A Nation (12 tracks, 2007)
