REVIEW - FIVE LEAF CLOVER "Meet Me in a Pub" (2015)

Five Leaf Clover "Meet Me in a Pub" Straky na vrbe
Release date: 17 March 2015
Running time: 26:37, 7 tracks

The Czech Republic is not a big country in terms of population (around 10,5 million people), but they have a lot of different bands playing Celtic rock or Celtic punk. Bands such as Hakka Muggies or Dick O’Brass can be labelled as Celtic rock/folk rock bands; Pipes and Pints and Curlies would be bagpipes punk bands; Benjaming’s Clan and Claymore would be bagpipes rock band, and Cheers! would be a Celtic punk outfit.

In the last months I have come across a bunch of new bands hailing from the Czech Republic: Vintage Wine, Pirates of the Pubs and Five Leaf Clover. Five Leaf Clover are a five piece band from Prague and they have recently released a mini-album titled “Meet Me in a Pub”. The current line-up is Pavel Brejcha (guitar, vocals), Lucie “Calwe” Eliášová (vocals, tin whistle), Jan "Erk" Mareš (bass, vocals), Jindřich "Estanor" Mašek (fiddle, vocals) and Petr “Ráfek” Skála (drums). Pavel and Petr founded the band in 2010 under the name Jolly Roger. They realized that there were quite a few bands with the same name and then it was changed to Five Leaf Clover. The band’s logo is a sheep called Shamus, a “cross between Ewan MacGregor on Trainspotting and Arnold Schwarzenneger”.

Five Leaf Clover define themselves as an Irish Rock Band. Taking into account that they cover some standards and play some well-known tunes, the word Irish is obvious. Regarding the word rock, Five Leaf Clover have a solid rhythm section that backs perfectly the fiddler and the flute.

Meet Me in a Pub” is a 7 track album consisting of 2 standards, one ballad featuring a couple of tunes and four self-penned numbers.

The Hangover Song” is the first track. Both tin whistle and fiddle are played on this number about the day after.

The next song is titled “Kilt” and boy and girl share vocal duties on this folk’n’roll number.

The Foggy Dew” is the first cover. Great fiddling and superb bass and drums provide a different twist to the song. Lead vocals by  Pavel and backing vocals by Lucie.

On “Four Bothers” they shift the roles: Lucie sings lead vocals and Pavel backing vocals. Amazing number.

The Wind” is a cover of the song “The Wind that Shakes the Barley”. It has an acoustic  intro reminiscent of McDermott’s 2 Hours and features both the “Morrison’s” jig and the “Cooley’s” reel.

Fairy” is another number sung by Lucie backed by Pavel. Lots of “heys” and more brilliant fiddling and amazing rhythm section on this folk rock song.

Finally, Five Leaf Clover deliver their own rendition of “Raggle Taggle Gipsy”. It gets a sort of a rap treatment, similar to other standards covered by the likes of Great Big Sea and Firkin. Different, but very good.

Five Leaf CloverMeet Me in a Pub” comes in a digipack. The band’s line-up and website are stated, but the lyrics to the songs are not included. The album was recorded in January 2015 in Ex Avik sound studio, mixed by Pavel Brom (who also plays tambourine on the album) and mastered by Premysl Haas. The album artwork has been designed by fiddler Jindrich Mašek.

Five Leaf Clover and Vintage Wine are two interesting bands that have been able to deliver something different and fresh, blending their own Czech musical and cultural background to the Celtic music. I have enjoyed particularly the balance between the rhythm section and the acoustic instruments on “Meet Me in a Pub”. A recommendable album.

P.S. Currently the band is looking for a banjo player. If you live in their area and are interested in playing with them, have a look to this YouTube video and contact Five Leaf Clover.

REVIEW - LENNON KELLY "Lunga vita al re" (2015)

Lennon Kelly "Lunga Vita al Re" (2015) Indie Box IBX044
Release date: 24 March 2015
Running time: 37:05, 10 tracks

After a 7 track album, the Italian band Lennon Kelly has just released their debut album “Lunga vita al re” (“Long Live the King”). Most of the tracks on the album are written by band members Vasco Abondanza a.k.a. “Bartowski” and Constantino Valentini a.k.a. “Roman”, but there are a track based on a Giuseppe Bartoli poem, a cover of “Drunken Sailor” whose lyrics have been written by Gorg Scur band member Mino Savadori and a cover of Steve Earle’s “Galway Girl”. All of the songs are sung in Italian, with the exception of “Un marineri imbarigh a e Ziznatich” (in Romagnol dialect) and “Galway Girl” (in English).

Lennon Kelly keeps on blending Celtic music with Italian music and “Lunga vita al re” puts them together with other Italian acts like Mosche di Vellutto Grigio or Modena City Ramblers. In fact MCR’s flutist Franco D’ Aniello guests on some tracks. At the very beginning Franco was hired to play his flute on the closing number. However, he fell in love with a couple of songs and he played his flutes on them too.

The album kicks off with “C.P.I.” C.P.I stands for Italian Political Class. There is a spoken intro, a speech by Sandro Pertini, former Italian President from 1978 to 1985 and one of the few Italian politicians really loved by the Italians. But the real song is a semi-instrumental number in the Flogging Molly song “Swagger” vein. The next number is another great moment, “Tra orizzonti e cantine”: mandolin, fiddle, accordion and flutes by guest Franco D’Aniello will make you love this song.

Lennon Kelly shifts to the Italian music on the next two numbers. Franco D’Aniello also guests on “Sangue e sale”, a song featuring electric guitar and“Lunga vita al re” has a catchy Italian accordion sound and some ska guitar.

Festa al fiume” is the number that Celtic punk fans will enjoy: a fast-paced anthem where accordion and tin whistle set the pace. It's a song to be filed together with Finnegan’s Hell’s CDs. The next number is the banjo led cover of “Drunken Sailor”, “Un marineri imbarigh a e Ziznatich”. Lennon Kelly has merged both “Drunken Sailor” and “Drowsy Maggie” on their rendition.

Sette nodi” is a familiar song, since it can be found on their previous mini-album too. This one features the well-known “Morrison’s” jig

Galway Girl” was recorded as a single in 2014 (You can watch the video HERE).As I wrote when I reviewed Keily’s Folk album, this song is really enjoyed by Italian bands, since Lennon Kelly, Keily’s Folk and Meneguinness have covered “Galway Girl”. Lennon Kelly’s rendition is really remarkable, thanks to the electric guitar arrangements.

To finish up, Lennon Kelly delivers a ballad called “Il santo bevitore” and a song based on a poem by Giuseppe Bartoli,La Morte di Corbari”. Modena City Ramblers' flutist plays too on this amazing number.

Lunga vita al re” comes in a jewel case with an 8 track booklet. The lyrics to all the songs, thank-yous and full credits are stated on the booklet and back cover.

Fans loving folk rock bands blending Celtic influences with their own local folk music will appreciate this amazing work by Cesena’s finest band, Lennon Kelly.

Tracklist:

01 - C.P.I. 2:19
02 - Tra orizzonti e cantine 3:46
03 - Sangue e sale 3:58
04 - Lunga vita al re 3:27

07 - Sette nodi 4:21
08 - Galway girl 3:10

REVIEW - THE SCALLY CAP BRATS "Our Storied Past" (2015)

The Scally Cap Brats "Our Storied Past" Take a Shot Records
Release date: 31 March 2015
Runnning time: 37:55, 14 tracks

Our Storied Past”, The Scally Cap Brats second album, was released last March 31. The band from Ottawa have recorded 10 new tracks and re-recorded the 4 tracks from their previous effort, the “Don’t Look Back” EP. Regarding the music, The Scally Cap Brats remain faithful to the street punk and oi! sounds. Usually they are more Bishops Green and Harrington Saints than Booze & Glory and Gimp Fist if you know what I mean.

All the re-recorded tracks are shorter than the EP versions. My fave is “Barry Square”, which has got a new lease of life. “The Shiners War” also differs from their previous take (remember that the one on “Don’t Look Back” was an acoustic version)

There are a couple of numbers featuring bagpipes: tracks no. 6 “Take Me Away” and tracks no. 12 “Lonely Days & Drunken Night”. The former is an amazing song and the latter has a Dropkick Murphys twist. As you probably know, The Scally Cap Brats love Dropkick Murphys debut album “Do or Die”, so it’s normal to find another early Dropkick Murphys infused number: “No Matter What”.

So, which are IMHO the highlights on the album (together with “Barry Square” and “Take Me Away”)? “Going Down the Line”, an awesome North American oi! anthem, “Help Your Heroes”, a catchy street punk number à la Gimp Fist, the mandolin driven “18th to 21st” and the opening track “Our Storied Past”.

Our Storied Past” comes in a clear jewel case with lyric booklet, artwork by mandolin player Mike Franey. A vinyl version will be available in Summer 2015.

The Scally Cap Brats keep on evolving as a band and their latest album is a well-balanced collection of self-penned songs.

Tracklist:

01. Our Storied Past 02:37
02. Barry Square 02:26
03. Going Down The Line 01:52
04. Two Chord 03:27
05. Claw And Dig 02:25
06. Take Me Away 02:44
07. The Shiner's War 02:43
08. Help Our Heroes 03:49
09. You Never Know 01:49
10. Yankee Jim 03:16
11. No Matter What 02:14
12. Lonely Days and Drunken Nights 02:11

Mighty Ploughboys - Jenna McLean

Lyrics for Jenna McLean by The Mighty Ploughboys

I believe in all of it ..whoah..in the wee hours in the morning. .Jenna gives me a smile.

Now I’m feeling upside down and I it seems that I’m getting nowhere fast just a matter no facts

Pre Chorus:

She said – when it comes I will try to survive it..said her eyes and things that surround it..i pretend but it still seems so blurry..because

Chorus:

When your just wasting time but you can’t take your eyes away from me

And you say its fine but I’m standing here- I’m right in front of you

And you say loves blind but Jenna cant always have everything

Now I am fighting urge whoah right and wrong start pushing back sometimes my life’s too fast

Was it something I was feeling and now I don’t even wanna ask...Jenna gives me a sigh

Ha..cause you were some I liked..it could have been something

Get hold of it. Flashed before my eyes

Get hold of it. Flashed before my eyes

REVIEW - Mr IRISH BASTARD - "The World, The Flesh and The Devil" (2015)

Mr. Irish Bastard "The World, the Flesh and the Devil" Reedo Records
Release date: 8 May 2015
Running time: 52:07 13 tracks, 59:39 13 tracks + 2 bonus tracks

Mr Irish Bastard, the legendary band from Germany, is releasing their brand new album on May 8th, that is, just one day before Europe Day. And it’s clear than the six piece band from Munster is at the forefront of the European Celtic punk scene.

The World, The Flesh and the Devil” kicks off with “Kingdom of the Sun”. After listening to the first notes, I feel that I have put another CD on the player. Greenland Whale Fishers? No, immediately the vocals and sound become familiar. Yes, they are Mr. Irish Bastard, the chorus is addictive as usual and there is enough place for the electric guitar.

The following track is one of the best numbers on this CD: “Drink Another Day”. It’s a catchy song featuring fiddle, tin whistle, banjo, electric guitar and mandolin. The chorus? Perfect: “When Irish eyes are smiling / and Irish souls are fighting / With a raised glass and a raised fist / I’ll fight my way out of this / And we’ll live to drink another day”. First anthem to add to the new collection.

On “Ballad of a Workshy Man”, the boys and the girl take a different approach, a sort of an angrier SIR REG.

Monsters in the Light” is a song with Brit-pop influences à la Madness and infectious chorus. It’s followed by another highlight, “I Hope They Sell Beer in Hell”. Second anthem to sing along at the pub.

Don’t You Walk Away” is a cross between The Men They Couldn’t Hang and Pretenders. Interesting song.

The third anthem is “Fuck You My Darling”. It has the same banjo sound that can be heard on “I Hope They Sell Beer in Hell” and this time Mr Irish Bastard visits the polka territory.

Black Island Ferry” is a 100% Mr. Irish Bastard classic sound and “Captain o Captain” moves again to the pop end with amazing chorus.

Three anthems are not enough, here comes the anthem number four: “That Bitch Drank My Whiskey”. Mr. Irish Bastard at its best: lively, catchy …

All the Time In the World” begins with a female choir and has a Levellers from the late 90’s influence.

Evil Ways” is the last of the kick-ass anthems on “The World, The Flesh and The Devil”. Probably it’s my fave song together with track two.

The standard version of the album ends up with “Grey Grey Grass”, an epic number.

Regarding the bonus tracks, “Black Dog” is really a well-written song and every single instrument has its place to shine, including fiddle and accordion. “Come Out Fighting” is a more intimate number.

The World, The Flesh and The Devil” has been produced by Jörg Umbreit and has been recorded by the band’s classic line-up (Mr. Irish Bastard on guitar and vocals, Lady Lily on tin whistle, Gran E. Smith on banjo and mandolin, Boeuf Strongenuff on bass and Ivo K’Nivo on drums) together with the so-called “Travelling Bastards” Itchy Quetchy on accordion and P and Moe Leicester on electric guitars and fiddler Fingers O’Toole. The album is available on mp3, vinyl, CD and limited CD de luxe edition (have a look to the pic).

The European Celtic punk scene is growing and new bands from Germany,  Hungary, Italy, Belgium or France are offering something fresh and attractive. However, the not-so-young bands like Mr Irish Bastard are still alive and kicking. They are back with a vengeance. The pubs are open, so grab a pint of stout and enjoy Mr Irish Bastard new Top Ten album.

02 - Drink Another Day 3:56
03 - Ballad of a Workshy Man 3:22

DUST RHINOS - LYRICS VIDEO FOR "FRIENDS OF MINE"

Help again the Dust Rhinos:

"We want you and your buddies to be in our video for "Friends of Mine". We are collecting footage from friends and fans and other musicians, singing along with the "Friends of Mine" chant and the HEY. We are also collecting b-roll footage of things they are doing with their friends. It can be shot on a cell phone or a camera or anything that will record video. We are then going to cut all of the footage together with a few bits of us playing the song. If you wouldn’t mind doing it we would love to have you in the video. We are collecting footage until May 30th. Should you choose to accept this challenge simply drop us a line when you have your footage shot and we will make arrangements for it’s transfer.

Here is the lyric version:

TRADITIONAL IRISH MUSIC AND INSTRUMENTS INFOGRAPHIC BY PAUL MURPY

Paul Murphy is the Managing Director of Murphy of Ireland, an Irish clothing retailer in business for over 75 years based in Co. Donegal in Ireland.

He produced this infographic ‘Traditional Irish Music and Instruments’ which is an overview of the origins of Irish traditional music and instruments from the Celts in 500BC to present day.

As a heritage retailer producing products made in Ireland, he is interested in all aspects of Irish heritage, culture and customs and he thinks that Celtic punk/rock fans might be interested in this too.
